I was not a good son when I was young. I always did very well in school. I behaved and got good grades.
But at home I didn't respect my mom.
Later, when I became older, I started to realize how much she had actually accomplished.

When my mother was 18 she joined the Air Force. This was in the 1970's and the Vietnam war was still ongoing.
She was sent to military language school to learn Chinese and then sent overseas to live in Taiwan. After that, she went to military language school again to learn Czech. She met my dad there, they got married and several years later, I was born and she left the Air Force.

But my mother always made sure that my sister and I were exposed to other languages and cultures. Our house was decorated with pictures and souvenirs from Mexico, Okinawa, Vietnam, France, Germany, and other places that my parents had lived and visited.
My mother made Chinese food, Mexican food, Italian food and Korean food.
People in Japan often compliment how I use chopsticks but I've been using them since I was 5 years old.

My mother never taught me to be proud of America. She always said that I was a "World Citizen" and that I should explore and respect all people, regardless of where they were from.

That has made it very easy for me to make friends with people from all over. I've never had any problems traveling and even though I know that languages take a lot of effort, I've never been afraid of learning.

I believe it was her influence that gave me the courage to both start studying Japanese and to see the world without borders and enjoy a life anywhere I want.

Thank you.
