点数じゃなくて、能力

Recently, I had a problem with a student who wanted to move to the next level. Their goal was to be able to speak high level business English and help their company in meetings, negotiations, teleconferences, etc.

 最近次のレベルに進みたい生徒がいた。その生徒の目標はビジネス英語を使いこなし、会議や交渉や電話会議などをできるようになることだ。

Good goals.

いい目標ですね。

But not easy goals.

しかし、簡単ではない。

Anybody can get to that level but it takes hard work and good study habits. 

The student was definitely a hard worker. I saw their notebooks. All signs indicated that effort wasn't the problem. 

誰でもその目標を達成できるけれど、努力ときちんとした勉強習慣が不可欠です。

その生徒は間違いなく、努力しています。

生徒のノートを見たところ、努力の様子がうかがえたからです。

But they were in too much of a rush. Here's the problem. When you rush, you can lose sight of the goals. They were completely focused on getting to the next level.

しかし、焦りすぎていました。

問題：

焦ると目標を見失うかもしれません。

その生徒は次のレベルに上がることにこだわりすぎていた。

At my current company, when you finish your textbook, you have a speaking evaluation. We do roleplays, free talk, etc. And my job is to find the weak points and give the best possible advice for their goals. In our training the company tells us that honesty comes before business so I'm quite happy with that. It allows me to focus on being a good teacher, rather than a salesman.

今の英会話学校では、教科書を終える際に、スピーキングの評価があります。ロールプレイやフリートークなどを通して、私は生徒の弱点を見つけ、最も役に立つアドバイスなどをします。

研修の時、営業より誠実さが大事だと教わりました。それが好きです。

そのお陰で、私はセールスマンではなく、教育に集中することが許されます。

But...often times students come in with the mindset that it's a test to be passed. To them, the goal is to get enough points to move to the next level.

でも。。。生徒たちは合格することにこだわりすぎます。彼らにとって目標は次のレベルに進む最低点を取ることだけです。

No, no, no, no, no, no, NO!

絶対ダメです。

The goal needs to be to improve your English. Not to score points. I believe this is one of the reasons that English levels in Japan are lower than other countries. Poor High school students just take test after test. The goal is not speaking English. It's just passing the test and moving on to the next school.

あるべき目標は英語を上達することです。点数じゃないです。これは日本での一般英語のレベルが低いことの１つの原因だと信じています。かわいそうな高校生達は次から次へと試験を受験させられています。その目標は英語のコミュニケーションではなくて、ただ合格して進学することです。

In the case of this student, they could survive most of the situations and roleplays but the grammar was full of mistakes and it sounded completely unnatural.

I made corrections for everything but I was basically ignored. They were in a rush to say what they wanted and use what they had studied, even though it wasn't correct.

今回の生徒の場合、状況とロールプレイはサバイブ出来るけど文法は間違いだらけだし、完全に不自然な英語でした。

私はすべての間違いを示したけど、その生徒は無視しました。

生徒は間違った英語を使っていたと知っていたにもかかわらず、言いたいことばかり考えていた。

My advice was to go back and review everything. For high level business situations, teleconferences in particular, grammar and pronunciation mistakes are unacceptable. But the student wasn't interested in fixing mistakes. They just wanted to go to the next textbook as though that would magically help them to their goals.

私のアドバイスは基礎からもう一回復習することです。複雑なビジネスの状況、特に電話会議では

文法と発音の間違いは致命的です。けれどその生徒は間違いを直すことに興味は全然ありませんでした。ただ次のレベルに上がれば、勝手に実力も上がると信じていました。

Sigh.

You can't ignore the basics.

And you can't move on to the next level until you have completely finished your current one.

基礎を無視することはダメです。

そして今のレベルの内容を完成させるまで、次のレベルに上がることはダメです。

My advice:

Make sure you do everything properly and thoroughly. Don't set the wrong goals. Aim for skill, not for numbers, points or levels.

私のアドバイス：

すべてをきちんと、徹底的に勉強してください。間違った目標を設定しないでください。

点数かレベルじゃなくて、能力が大切です。
